losing ldaps connection

I'm using an application that is using the 5.0-something libraries.
The connection is over SSL to ADS 2003, but I seem to be losing
connections occasionally. There are no intervening firewalls and ADS
is set to timeout at 1h, but I lose the connection sooner than that.

Can someone give me some suggestions as to how I can diagnose this
considering that the libraries are provided by a third-party? Are
there specific questions I can ask the vendor? For example, is it
possible that some sort of timeout is set by default in the libraries?
All that I get back from their logs is that it is failing over to
another connection.
