LDAP Application reporting LDAPERR 81

We have an application that needs to rebind to an AD (using port 3268). After a prolonged period of uptime we begin to see LDAPERR 81 and once this begins our application cannot recover. Is there a common cause for this error? Has anyone seen this and can suggest a way we can either eliminate the error or at least recover from it?
