Thanks for the tip, Neil.  It turns out *.app is a compressed collection 
of jars (like *.xpi).  After swapping extensions, Firefox 2.0.4 attempts 
to install like any other extension but fails with error 204: Install 
script not found.  I'll fiddle with this some more but, if you find 
anything else, please let me know.
