Error "GLib-ERROR **: The thread system is not yet initialized."

When try to start up Mozilla or MozillaFirebird, I get this error:

	GLib-ERROR **: The thread system is not yet initialized.
	aborting...

I'm using gtk2, recent versions of gtk+ and glib.  Any ideas about 
what's causing the problem or how to fix it?
