Can't configure gtk

Good grief!  How many packages does gtk rely on?!!  I've been fighting 
with this stupid thing for nearly two days.  I still can't get it to 
recognise my pango.  Of course, I can't get pango to build in the xft, 
because that's need freetype and all the junk that *that* requires. 
When I tell pango to use xft, it doesn't.  I can't actually build xft, 
becuase I don't have xrender!!!   AAAHHHHH.  It never ends!

Can somebody tell me exactly what I need to make this work on a Solaris 
9 box?
