Ok, here's the definitive answer to what must seem senseless raving of a 
demented old man.

It is the Skypilot theme causing the filename truncation.  The default 
theme works fine, displaying the whole filename, even for some quite 
long ones.  I will take up the issue with Sailfish.

My apologies to the programmers, and my thanks to all who patiently helped.
