extension thuderbird

hello,
I try to create a thunderbird extension that implements a cryptographic 
system which i can implement using a java library. I want to ask you about 
the best way to run the java applet from thunderbird, i think about the 
possibilty to call the java applet from javascript using liveconnect, but i 
fear that this will work only for a user that have a virtual machine java. 
So should i develop a JAVAXPCOM, and is javaxpcom ready for use with 
thuderbird?
Can you help me pleaze and tell me what is the best solution?
