Firefox does not display<applet>this text</applet>

I put up a 360º panorama viewer Java Applet at my site. I put text between the <applet> and </applet> tags so it would display if Java is disabled in the browser. This works in IE but not in FF. What do I do to get FF to display something if Java is not enabled?
