I've given up on ESR52 for the moment. The reason? If I do a staticly 
linked debug build, it crashes immediately in JS_Init.  I was told on 
the #jsapi (by Steve as a matter of fact) this was a linkage problem.

Since JS45 works, and there's no compelling feature of the newer version 
I need, I can't spend any more time right now on it.

The Spidermonkey developers have worked really hard on a robust, high 
performance JS Engine.  It is not a good thing that the documentation is 
out of date, or that simple things -- like compiling a "Hello World" 
example -- are broken.  It reflects poorly on the serious effort of all 
the developers who contribute to Spidermonkey.
