In addition to what Christopher said, Apple Mail will NOT create an 
account for Usenet.

Even Apple Mail is just a simple email client.

If you want to combine email accounts and Usenet accounts in the same 
application, use one of the following:

Entourage (supplied with Microsoft Office for Macintosh).  Not very good 
as a newsreader, in my estimation.  Not even as good as Outlook Express 
for Windows, though it is an excellent email client.  By the way, 
Outlook Express for Macintosh is a very poor newsreader, like most 
Macintosh newsreaders.

SeaMonkey (developed by Mozilla.org).  Like all Mozilla clients, this 
has very poor filtering.  In fact, it looks EXACTLY like Netscape, 
Thunderbird, and Mozilla, and is configured exactly the same way.  
SeaMonkey is additionally bogged down with the Mozilla brower engine.
Even Thunderbird would be better than SeaMonkey, since SeaMonkey has a 
browser.

Outlook Express for Macintosh.  This is a great email client, but has 
very poor newsreading abilities.  In addition, the Classic environment 
must be installed and running to use it, since it is not an OS X 
application.  In fact, Microsoft has stopped development on it 
completely, and Microsoft has no plans to develop an OS X version.   
(note that the Classic environment is NOT supplied with OS X.  You must 
use a version of the Mac OS installation CDs previous to OS X to install 
it).

Netscape.  It pretty much is the grandfather of SeaMonkey.

Personally, I separate my Usenet client from my email client, and use 
MT-NewsWatcher 3.4 as my Usenet client, and Entourage as my email client.

Others have different tastes than I, I am sure.  Especially Mozilla 
"evangelists".  If Mozilla ever adds decent Boolean views and filters, I 
too will become a Mozilla "evangelist" (I really like Camino as my 
web-browser, rather than Safari).  I cannot be one at this time, 
however, since there is nothing about the Mozilla clients to evangelize 
about.  They are passable email clients, but very poor Usenet clients.  

There are many things I do like about Mozilla clients, and would like to 
see incorporated into other OS X clients, but OS X developers have their 
own thoughts on how a newsreader should be, and want nothing to do 
(apparently) with any ideas from a former Windows user or Windows 
developers.

It is also possible that OS X just CAN'T do the things (such as sorting 
on two columns at once) which Windows can do, so incorporating these 
methods into OS X is extremely difficult.
