I don't use Thunderbird, so YMMV, but when you go to the password manager,
doesn't it list the sites for which it has saved user names and passwords?

Can you just remove the entry for the site in question?

Then, when you access the site, it will prompt for user name and
password, and when submitting that, you should be asked again if
you want to save them.

At least, this is how it works in Mozilla (1.7.12).
