Socket not connected message

For the last few days Netscape (v. 4.78) sends me this message constantly:
A network error occured while Netscape was receiving data. (Network
error: Socket is not connected.) Try connecting again.
I have a cable modem which is working fine. Internet Explorer never gives me
this message, and in fact, despite the constant annoying message, I do
receive data via Netscape.
I have a Mac G3, OS 8.6. What do I need to do to get rid of this annoying
problem?
