Just a thought....

I have been using OS X for a long while and have my mail password 
working automatically for so long I am not sure if my help is correct. 
If I remember correctly when you click on "get messages" on the menu bar 
in mail a dialogue box pops up asking for your password. There should be 
a check box you can select to automatically provide the password.

I hope my memory isn't faulty.
