Is SSL authentication on a per newsgroup or per server basis?

I am running Mozilla 1.5.1
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.5.1)
Gecko/20031120

I subscribe to an ISP newsserver that uses SSL.

It seems that when I go from reading one newsgroup to another,
I have to re-enter my username and passsword.

Is this because the authentication is being timed out (presumably
newswerver behaviour), or is it because Mozilla requires
authentication on a per newsgroup rather than on a per server
basis?

If the latter is the case, is it a bug or a feature?
