Mozilla problems w/saving "Roaming User" data to USB key

I'm trying use the "Roaming User" feature (aka Roaming Profiles) to save 
my Moz data to a USB data key.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.3.7 with Mozilla 1.8 alpha 5.

The problem comes after I reboot my Mac.  The USB key appears to the 
file system the same as it was before with the name "/Volumes/USB 
MEMORY", but Mozilla doesn't see it.

When I go into Moz's Roaming User preferences and browse to reselect the 
  "Copy to/from directory" and rechoose the USB MEMORY volume, it shows 
up in the Moz field as "/Volumes/USB MEMORY 1"  (note the 1 is new).

Any ideas about this weird behavior?
