OK, I worked on this problem some more, and I got the XSLTProcessor
approach to work out.  You can check out the results at the following

To see the Javascript, do a "view source" from your browser.  Needless
to say, it is designed to work in Firefox.  I haven't tested it on IE
myself, but reports indicate that it doesn;t work there, even with the
MathPlayer plug-in.  Oh darn.  Oh, and to get the applet to work, you
will need the Java plug-in v1.5 or later.

To be fair, the Javascript code is pretty kludgy -- to get the content-
to-presentation mapping from mathml.xsl, I had to use the
XSLTProcessor, but to get the character entities from the MathML DTD,
all I had to do was add a DOCTYPE line to the text that was sent to
the div.  Anyway, it works now.
