One of these is two is bound to work (I don't remember which one did the 
trick for me):

1. Add to your ~/.bashrc

export MOZ_DIZABLE_PANGO=1

2. Create or edit

~/.mozilla/firefox/rc

so that it contains

MOZ_DIZABLE_PANGO=1

Also if you haven't done it install the Bakoma CM fonts, the Mathematica 
4.1 fonts and the Symbol font from Acrobat Reader as per usual 
recommendations.
