Yes, it works by Firefox listening for custom DOM events and then 
waiting for the web application to trigger an event.

Another approach is used at 
http://hyperstruct.net/2006/8/18/exchanging-data-between-chrome-and-content 
, but I think it is safer to use the first one since the latter is more 
likely to lead to name conflicts.
