OK. I replaced that version with the one that got built alongside 
Thunderbird, version 3.3.8. Untested

For buttons without text, right click on the UI, between buttons. Choose 
customize and in the lower right should be a dropdown list allowing you 
to choose icons, no text.. Might have to hunt a bit to find a spot where 
the right click works.
For disabling tabs, Options-->Advanced-->Reading & Display then click 
the right option under Open message in:
