Sure, I'd recommend keeping monospace but it ca be changed under 
Edit-->Preferences-->Mail & Newsgroups-->Message Display, towards the 
bottom under Plain text messages.
The Monospace font (along with others) can be changed under 
Preferences-->Appearance--Fonts
