There is a missing piece in my recommendation, though: the UI for 
whitelisting a disabled plugin for individual websites you trust is not 
easy to use (i.e. a checkbox buried in the Page Info dialog box). A 
browser extension (hint hint ;) could add a toolbar button that can 
allow or block plugins from a simple dropdown menu with check boxes. 
That extension functionality would be useful in both Firefox and Chrome.
