Overlapping Submenus?

Like in most modern software, in Mozilla submenus will pop up side
by side with the main menu without any overlap. In the "File" menu,
for example, when you mark the entry "New" a submenu will pop up.
In order to choose an entry in that submenu, you have to move the mouse
pointer over to the submenu exactly horizontally, which is a pretty
hard thing to do even for non-disabled people (particularly on a laptop
with a touchpad!). The slightest aberration will cause the submenu to
disappear.

Is there any way to configure mozilla so submenus will overlap?
(Or maybe some way to configure the way GTKs menus behave in general?)
To illustrate what I am looking for, here's a little picture:

Menus that behave this way are much easier to handle!
(The "traditional" menu style in fvwm, for example, looks like this)

A little side note: When searching google for a solution, I found
the recommendation to experiment with the option "ui.submenuDelay",
which also looked like it would make things a little easier. However,
at least in Mozilla 1.2b, this option doesn't seem to have any effect.

Any thoughts?
