AFAIK, Moz uses the browsing history to autocomplete URIs typed into the 
loc bar. If you have a broken URI in the history it will show up as part 
  when autocompleting, Removal of the bad URI will stop this happening. 
You can also customise how it works. See here for options:

You can clear the loc bar here:

As for laundering your prefs.js, I would make a back up, delete the 
incorrect entries and see what happens. You can always restore your 
original prefs.js if it all goes pear shaped.
