Forget the "hosts" file. Use the built-in adblocker routines in place
already in the preferences.

EDIT -> Prefs -> Security/Privacy -> "Popup Windows"

EDIT -> Prefs -> Advanced -> "Scripts/Plugins"

They WORK !! ;-)
