Using GetCharPref

I found a few examples of how to use GetCharPref in LXR, but there are some expressions which are not equal in different files: 1. The char* is initialized with 0, NULL, or nsnull. 2. It is freeed with nsMemory::Free(), PL_strfree(), or sometimes not at all. Which is the correct way to do this, or are they all equal? Thanks M.
