I did consider that. However I do like to have my mails checked at given 
intervals when I have my mail client open. Changing that setting would 
make my mail client not check at all.

I simply want it to stop checking in the background once I close the 
mail client but leave any of the other mozilla features such as IRC or 
browser open.
