Wanted: JavaScript for generating vertical and horizontal Axes with Tick Marks

Does someone have a javascript for SVG that will fetch the viewbox values 
and generate a vertical and horizontal axis complete with labels and 
aesthetically pleasing intervals as computed, perhaps, by getBBox() so the 
text labels won't overlap?

When creating SVG documents in emacs for use with Adobe Illustrator and 
Mozilla Firefox, it is very handy to have some axis you can see so you know 
where you are!
