Wasn't too hard since I had some suspects that I tried first

Tree Style Tab https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5890

that breaks the xlink:hrefs

Apart from showing tabs in a tree the extension also somewhat changes 
link behavior in html pages - and apparently in SVG :(

I send the developer a mail about the issue.
