It must be something in your networking.  My setup is a cable-modem 
using (surprise) dhcp over eth1 and using the Linux firewall.  This means:
- no ppp or pppiop setup
- no actual modem

I'd do not know what you are using, but the HW drivers or whatever ppp 
stuff you use could be a good place to start.

Do you use some special window/block sizes? (When I first started using 
NFS, files > 2MB were not being transferred at all - it just hung, it 
turned out that 2.4 allowed larger blocking than 2.6 does)

What else does not work?

Any messages in /var/log/messages?
