Using Mozilla without DISPLAY set

Hi,
We have an application written using Mozilla, to implement an installer 
frontend. Problem is, we want a silent and console option for the installer,
which causes problems if DISPLAY is not set on UNIX, as the libnecko module
tries to initialise the GUI subsystem, which fails if GTK has not been
initialised (I can provide more details, such as stack trace, if necassary.)

Has anyone any suggestions on how to get round this?
