XFT vs. Freetype?

I have compiled mozilla with either Freetype or XFT.
i.e.
ac_add_options --disable-xft
ac_add_options --enable-freetype2
or disabling freetype and enabling xft2.

Mozilla seems to be more stable with Freetype but has ugly
fonts on some pages while XFT2 the fonts look wonderful.
When Mozilla is compiled with XFT and I load a page like,
http://pricewatch.com, Mozilla immediately dies with no 
warning.  It does this on some other pages too.

I am running XFree86 4.4.0 and higher.
