Launching with "mozilla" works fine for me, but since you're using a 
Debian build, all bets are off.  Launching with the profile name 
(mozilla -P profilename) doesn't work and I think other commandline 
flags might also confuse it.  There a bug on this somewhere in 
bugzilla.  You'll need to dig to figure out if you're seeing the same 
bug or if Debian broke something.
