I'm not sure what you mean by "loading the file into a new navigator
window". Do you mean that the window gets filled by "strange"
characters? That is that the file is loaded as if it was a text file.
In that case it's the web server that serves the file with the wrong
mime type, probably text/plain instead of audio/x-wav. 

Mozilla 1.4 fathfully believes the web server. Later versions of
Mozilla (I don't remember from which version, probably 1.7) guesses
the correct mime type of a binary file from the file extension if the
mime type text/plain is given.
