How can I use the old fonts

I really prefer the appearance of the old fixed-size fonts over the 
freetype fonts (whether antialiased or not).  Is there a way I can 
configure either the application or freetype/xft to get the old fonts 
(in particular I'm thinking of thunderbird, for which there doesn't even 
seem to be a non-xft build)?
