Did as you suggested only I used 'rpm -i --force --allfiles' for all 
packages returned by 'rpm -qa | grep kde'. No luck.

I've used switchdesk and xdm to find out that all the remaining window 
managers appear to work, specifically gnome, fvwm, enlightenment, 
windowmaker and twm, but not KDE. The display never is really able to 
start x so to speak, I get the X cursor but the monitor just switches 
modes over and over.

I'm sure this is related to xprint which is why I posted here and not 
having used the rpm (it didn't work and now I know why) how can I 
uninstall or the tar installation? Or what else could it be?
