I was having trouble on Linux (debian) with page size resetting back
to A4 despite mozilla and the system both being set to usletter
(I'd change the to usletter size in mozilla, and next time I started
up it would be set at A4 again).

The problem turned out to be Xprint.  I uninstalled Xprint and
the page size went back to usletter, and mozilla's printing improved.
It's possible that you're seeing something like this on Solaris ...
it's worth checking, anyway.
