It's possible that the site has instructed the browser to not 
autocomplete, via an attribute in the HTML.  It's also possible that 
firefox's login-detection heuristic isn't catching this case; without 
seeing the page it's hard to say for sure.

(SSL has nothing to do with it.  If you want to keep your passwords 
safe, use a Master Password.  In-transit interception is probably the 
hardest of all feasible attacks for that sort of thing.)
