I once tried to build some earlier version w/ Tk or xlib, did not go
much anywhere.  I will be glad to hear if Mozilla will be operable
and able to build w/ something other than gtk2.

So it is possible to use gtk12 to build mozilla post 1.7.3 version?
Do you need to do anything special or everything is listed in
configure script?  I will have to try it outside of FreeBSD ports
system.
