I'm not sure about this, but you may be able to use "Helper 
Applications". Say you have a program that will play the file format you 
want... You set Mozilla to use that program as a helper application. 
Then when it detects that file format, it will launch the helper.

Otherwise, Plugger and Mozplugger are excellent utilities which allow 
Mozilla to use those outside applications as plugins. I'm using Plugger 
for linux, but it may be available for other unixes as well.
