AdBlock is capable of filtering background images (I've tried it with 
IMDB's photo galleries, which also use a table background to display the 
actual pictures).
Did you include the trailing * in the AdBlock rule?
Which version of AdBlock are you using (I'm using v0.5d2 Nightly build 39).
