all right, this is not exactly what I had hoped for, but I can live with
it.

I do in fact have IMAP on my machine, but that was just meant to make a
squirrelmail server possible.  whenever I used squirrelmail all my
incoming mail in $MAIL moves to my $HOME/mbox.  this is the same which
happens with Thunderbird if I tell it to use my IMAP account.  This is not
what I want to happen but is partially acceptable, as this file is also
easily accessible from mutt and balsa.

I did not set up mutt and balsa to use IMAP nor POP, they simply read from
$MAIL and it's me the one who moves the messages to any of the files in
$HOME/Mail/.  mutt and balsa share the same data and cooperate nicely, the
only trouble they cause each other without my intervention is that they
mark mails as "O"ld.  in balsa I see all mailboxes (files in $HOME/Mail) I
generated with mutt and the converse is also true.

the IMAP solution is only *partially* acceptable since thunderbird still
does not see any of the mailboxes I generate in balsa or mutt. what I
would really like is thunderbird to offer the same level of cooperation as
balsa and mutt.

in practice?

the possibility to add a "unix account"... - read (but not automatically
retrieve) mail from $MAIL - use $HOME/Mail to store messages in mailboxes
- keep any kind of extra data (indexes?) out of the way.

(((actually I would also like squirrelmail to be able to do the same, but
that would be a bit more complex, as that does not run as $USER...)))

is there any possibility to achieve this?
