 From my personal experiences with pine and elm neither use a trash mbox 
file.  Deleted messages are expunged when the application is closed. 
Mozilla's IMAP server properties can be configured to do the same.

I'm not sure when *nix applications picked up the very "windowsish" 
behavior of using Trash folders.
