Replying to my own mail . . .

It looks as though what happened was:
- There was a problem with the mail-server at the other end.
- My POP3 login attempt was rejected
- this appears to cause the stored password to be nuked.

Well, I keep backups.  The solution was to rename /home/account to
/home/acctsave, restore the saved /home/account, go into X11, Mozilla
and the password manager (Offline!!) and look at the saved password
before restoring the previous version of /home/account.

Having now used the web mail interface for this particular email
account, I should now be safe(r).
The joys of strong, unique passwords ;-)

I had tried sniffing first but it did not help.
