Mozilla overloaded by 1.5Mb xml file

When I tried to open a 1.5Mb XML file in Mozilla 1.6 on Windows XP, Mozilla
used 400 MB+ of memory (including VM) and stopped responding. I tried the
same file in IE (which I normally don't use) and it was OK. I had to stop
the process after a while from Task Manager (a sort of windows kill -9) to
stop the disk thrashing.

Any ideas why? Any idea what the limit is?
