XUL Explorer - how can i respond to user actions?

hello,

i installed the xul explorer, very helpfull tool. but if i want to make an addon that respond to user actions, like the user open a new tab and url there, how can i test it in the xul explorer?

another example, i only want to display a text in the statusbar from firefox. i dont want to make a new statusbar, i want to display the text in the statusbar from firefox.

how can i realize this in the xul explorer and see the result?
