auto size with of svg graphic ?

I am trying to auto size a horizontal bar (similar to a spacebar) created 
with svg

I simply want the bar to resize to the width of the containing block (xul 
box) but keep the height of the bar fixed

Can anyone point  in the right direction  eg example

All the examples I have found so far seem to show autoscale
