It's probably best to install the latest version of Sun's jre from 
java.sun.com. Mozilla should automatically find the plugin dll's when 
you next open it.

Sounds like the link on the page is broken, or you have javascript 
installed (a script is called for automatic installation from a 
webpage). You can open the xpi file you downloaded in mozilla, and it 
will install. 'Open using' Mozilla when you get the popup should also 
work.

Helper apps are used to deal with files Mozilla or one of its plugins 
can't handle. Java Webstart is an example. Type about:plugins in the 
URL bar to get a list of installed plugins.
