You can launch the install from your own page by providing a link to the
plugin, but the user *will* have to interact with the approval dialog (for
obvious reasons).

Yes, the 4.x "SmartUpdate" uses a different script syntax and requires
signed .jar files. Mozilla-based browsers use .xpi files. They are
conceptually the same, but you will need two separate versions.
