per-user XPI install?

Hello,

I apologize if this is a FAQ, but perusal of Google and previous
messages in this newsgroup don't seem to indicate so.

The problem looks like this: I have a Mozilla 1.0 installed from a
Debian package. That is, installed system-wide by root user.
Consequently, non-root users are unable to install XPIs, because
/usr/lib/mozilla is protected by Unix permissions to them. I know that I
can browse to the installation of a particular XPI as root, then (for
some XPIs) restart Mozilla to register new components. The question is -
is it at all possible to install components for system-wide installed
Mozilla on a per-user basis? That is, Mozilla stays in /usr/lib/mozilla,
but for a prticular user, there's something only s/he needs in his
~/.mozilla/.../chrome directory?

Thanks a lot in advance.
