While it is the first amendment adopted, it was not the first amendment 
proposed.  There were 12 amendments proposed, the first 2 were not adopted.

In 1992, the second proposed amendment was ratified, and is now the 27th 
amendment to the Constitution.

No, I'm not a walking genius here, that info comes from US document 
110-50.  This is the copy of the Constitution that I believe is still in 
use by the US House of Representatives.
